How to Mow your Lawn Properly

Believe it or not there is a correct and incorrect way to mow your lawn. When done the correct way the lawn has the look it would get if you hired a professional gardener, and the grass will continue to grow in a healthy manner. If it is done the incorrect way, it will look ratty, the grass will be cut uneven and it will grow in patches and wildly. It will look like someone took a machete to it.
The first step is to make sure you have a good mower. Push mowers are good for smaller lawns. Riding mowers are best for larger areas. Check the lawnmower when you buy it. Put the right amount of gas and oil in if it is a gas mower. If it is an electric mower, check the cord before you plug it in to make sure it is safe. If it is a manual push mower, you may want to check to make sure the wheels are greased and move easily. Check your blades on any mower to make sure they are clean, sharp and free of any damage. Make sure they are adjusted to the right height. If you cut your grass too short you can actually kill it.
You can cut your grass in a cross pattern, straight back and forth, or go around the edges and work your way to the middle. You will want to trim the edges with a trimmer since they are part of the lawn also and most mowers cannot get close enough around flowerbeds without damaging them. Save your clippings, as they make good mulch. Some cities will cite you for putting them in the trash, while other cities have special bags and pick up times for garden refuse.
