One of the initial things you need to do before choosing the best plants for your garden is to decide if you prefer to plant vegetables or to landscape. Once you do this, you can begin thinking about the plants you would like to have in your yard. If it is landscaping that you wish to focus on this year, here are some things you need to think about in order to choose the best plants for your garden.
As you observe the areas in your yard that you wish to spruce up with plants, pay attention to whether or not sun is available and if so, for how long each day. Many plants do very well in full sun and even drought conditions, whereas others require the coolness and moisture of pure shade. There are also those plants that can tolerate a bit of both. You need to think about colors that you wish to introduce into your landscape and make sure they blend nicely together as if you were trying to create a painting. Keep in mind to plant clusters of the same species of plant together to produce a more vibrant and organized look. It's also helpful to be aware of how tall or short and bushy or not a plant becomes when full grown, so not to overpower or cramp out smaller, more delicate plants. Introducing trees, shrubs, perennials and ground coverings graciously amongst each other can set up a beautiful display for your landscape.
