Sometimes, when it comes to simple tasks, it is not as simple as it seems. When it comes to mowing your lawn, the same rule applies. Mowing a lawn is not just about running a lawn mower through once and being done, it is about knowing how to properly mow your lawn so it can look beautiful and last for years, even through the rough weather.
In order to properly know how to mow your lawn, you need to first known your grass. Grass, just like other things, varies in shape, size and texture. It is not the same thing mowing healthy, green grass and unhealthy brown grass. The first thing to know is to never cut more than a third of the grass leaf. By cutting it shorter, you are actually allowing your lawn to have more weeds and thinner roots. In other words, by cutting only a third or less of the grass, you are helping the grass to stay healthy longer. It will "green-up" faster in the spring and last longer in the fall.
Some people might say to mow the lawn in rows or columns, but this doesn't mean that it will help your lawn to be healthier. This method is just so your lawn will look better. Imagine a lawn mowed at different angles. Also, some say that scattering the clippings on top of your lawn helps it to fertilize, but this varies by lawn. "Spot test" on a part of your lawn that doesn't show to see if it works for you. Make sure to not mow your lawn every day because this will cause the grass to become damaged.
