Keeping Your Lawn Properly Fertilized and Watered

Keeping your lawn fertilized and watered properly will keep your grass healthy and attractive. Your lawn will be less susceptible to pests and disease and an attractive, well-manicured lawn adds to the curb appeal and value of your home. It doesn't take much to water and fertilize your lawn properly, as long as you have the proper information.

You will need to check with a local garden center in order to determine the proper fertilizer for your type of grass. Fertilizers revitalize your grass and provide the minerals needed for it to stay thick and green. Too much fertilizer can burn the grass, however, while not enough will promote inadequate nutrition. Experts can tell you how exactly much and when to apply the fertilizer.

Some grasses benefit from fertilization in mid-summer and others in late spring. It is also important to ensure even coverage and a broadcast spreader is used by most gardeners. Watering is usually recommended when you know there will be rain. Expert gardeners recommend that water equaling an inch be applied over a week.

Water is essential to life and your lawn is no exception. A lawn with sparse grass will have hardened soil and any water will roll over it without time to soak. When the weather is hot, the best time to water your lawn is in the early morning. Watering at night will promote conditions for disease development. If you water during the day the water will evaporate before being absorbed. To help make the water soak through the soil better, the soil should be aerated. You can use a hoe for this task, or save money by simply walking over your lawn in sharp cleats. You will also need to follow any local watering restrictions.
