Sunshine in Your Garden

Assuring that the proper amount of sunshine reaches your garden is usually done by with the aid of a diagram or drawing. Determine which direction your home faces and what time of day the sun will be shining on each area of your home and garden.

After you have an outline of the way the sun rises and sets on your home, and what area you have to plant a garden, then you can begin the planting process. First you will decide which type of plants you will want to plant in your sun filled areas. During different times of day the sun is stronger and more intense, so keep this in mind. In the morning, the sun is not as bright, therefore you should choose plants that can also tolerate shade for those areas.

Cut away any large trees that may block the sunlight from reaching your garden. Tree obstruction can cause large amounts of sunlight to be blocked from the garden during the day, which should be avoided. Sunlight is the most important part of growing a healthy garden, so make sure you are planting in an area that receives sunlight for the entire day.

If you want to plant vegetables in your sun filled garden, plant them approximately 20 inches apart. The rows need to have room for vegetable growth and should not block sunlight from the other plants. Leaving all of the plants enough room to grow will ensure that they will grow well and thrive.

Daisies, roses, and lilies are all sun loving flowers to consider if you choose to have a flower garden. Pick out colors that you enjoy and leave plenty of room in between plants to ensure they each receive necessary sunlight throughout the day.
