Methods for planting trees has evolved over the years. Some methods have been proven not be helpful, like planting depth and soil improvement. Eliminating some of the old methods and adding some knew methods can help you plant trees that will thrive. One of the new methods is to dig a hole three times as wide as the root ball of the tree and just as deep. This is to keep the roots on solid ground to support the weight of the tree.
When planting your tree, loosen the dirt around the tree. You want to have a wide shallow space around the tree. This will help the roots to grow. Make sure to set the soil line, a mark at the base showing where the plant was originally covered with soil, usually just above its previous level. If you’re planting in sandy ground, you can place the mark level with the ground. However, just don't go past it.
Another misconception is you should thin one-third of the branches after planting. However, trimming some branches can be a good idea. Branches that are growing at an awkward angle can be trimmed. If you have competing leaders, trim all but one. During the first year or so, your newly planted tree will require more water. When watering, make sure to soak the ground entirely and let it completely dry before watering again. Late summer and early fall are the best times to plant a new tree. This will give your tree's roots time grow before winter hits.
