Many spots in a lawn may need a little help to improve the plant growth. Many manufactured products can help with the problem and there are some good products out there that many have used for years. If we are making a new yard or flower bed we can use some humus, now this in the form of compost, just work it in and let it do it's job.
If you are making new lawn or beds you may need to fertilize your soil to give it a boost to the vegetation therein. We improve the soil so as to add organic matter to organically-deficient soils when there is a need to increase root health and growth, thus improving the uptake of food for the plants. When the increase of photosynthesis the seed germination is increased. When the soil is healthy plants are healthy. Healthy plants improve the production of healthy plants, be it grass or flowers or shrubs.
Before the development of commercial fertilizer, and who might know when that was, you could ask any farmer how to improve your soil to improve plant growth. He might kick back on his hay bale and ponder that question and then with a sly grin he would tell the story about how his grandfather taught his father how to farm. One of the most important aspects of farming is to improve the soil so it would make the most product. His secret, he would say, was good old cow manure.
