Importance of Appropriate Sunshine for Plants

Almost every plant needs sunshine to thrive. Sunlight plus water and nutrients from soil give plants energy to grow. The plants give off oxygen, which we need to breathe, so there is an essential cycle formed. The appropriate hours of sunlight needed for each plant to grow are an important factor in deciding where they should be planted.
Plants that grow in containers need special care when it comes to how much sunshine they should receive each day. They need to be observed every day to pick up warning signs of anything that isn't right. A plant like the tomato needs about six to eight hours of sunlight. If the plants have begun to droop, they probably need water. Water should be administered regularly and evenly. The soil needs to be checked for dryness, especially in hot weather. If the plant is growing, but suckers are appearing, these should be snapped off to allow nutrients to be channeled into the main stem. A tomato plant needs lots of nutrients and moisture while it is in the growing stage.
Experiments are often completed by grade school children who are studying science or in biology classes that show the effects on plants that have adequate sunshine provided and what happens when they do not. The plants that have adequate sunlight grow normally to a regular height with healthy leaves and color. The ones that do not get the proper amount of sunshine are spindly, lack good color, and are sickly. This is a good hands on experiment to show children the importance of adequate sunshine.
