Proper Placement of Plants

When you are planting your flower beds or other plants, such as shrubs, you must look at the big picture. Some plants get big and if you plant them in front of a window, they may cover the window in time. Plant low growing shrubs so as not to block the view. However, you should understand that some low growing plants still get a little out of hand now and then and must be pruned.
If you have a low spot to plant, make sure the plants you will be planting there are adapted to wet soil, and if you are planting several plants, make sure they will be compatible to the area. Some that are compatible for wet soil will need a good bit of sunshine, but others not so much. If you are planting a large area, you may want to start with some larger growing plants toward the back and come forward with those not so tall.
Plan to match plants that will compliment each other in shape and colors. German bearded iris is a beautiful plant for flower beds. Some grow 2-3 feet tall and can have shorter plants in front of them for a beautiful bed. Plant some petunias or ageratum. Sweet alyssum or portulaca make for a nice ground cover, along with geraniums and cornflowers. Remember that iris do move as they reproduce the next year, so they may have to be divided every three or four years. Plan for the perfect placement of your plants.
