Most plants know what they like and have a mind of their own so you must place plants in the areas they like to live or they will not give you the beauty they are capable of. If you like the flowering shrubs they need lots of sunlight to encourage blooming. These can be planted in a corner of the yard if they are not shielded by a large shade tree nearby. Prolific bloomers in the Southern part of the USA can be Oleanders, Azaleas, and Confederate Rose to name a few.
Some plant hold their beauty in their foliage. Plant these, if they are low growing, near the front of your flower beds, Hostas love the shaded but will grow in the sun also, these are low growing. Crotons are also very beautiful for the showy foliage. Varigated Ginger as well as the green variety of Ginger are equally beautiful and the blooms are a very striking addition to your beds. These are taller plants so plan where you will plant these.
If you have hedges that need some color, chose some plants that have beautiful flowers. Miniature Azaleas can be a lovely addition to a row of bushes to add a splash of color to your landscape. Also you may want to plant some trees known for their blooms and colorful foliage in the summer. Japanese Maple has beautiful red leaves and Silver Maple has silver under leaves. The Purple Smoke Tree looks like it is smoking when it blooms. Research to find which will be best in your area.
