Removal of Weeds

Weeds in a lawn area are a real threat to the growth of grass. They need to be dealt with when they are spied. They can be pulled out by the roots or doused with an herbicide, but they need to be removed quickly. If you decide to use herbicides for killing the weeds, check the grass variety you have in your yard as it may be susceptible to the herbicide and may make it more difficult to get rid of the weeds. The weeds will take over the area and the grass won't be able to take hold and root.

Mulching your garden and lawn can help prevent weeds from growing. The mulch should be at least three inches deep to maintain ground coverings. It will stabilize the ground temperature and retain moisture. When it decomposes it can be raked into the top layer of the soil to make it richer. Fertilizing your lawn around Thanksgiving time will keep grass roots growing through the winter and result in a quick green up in springtime. This is when you will see the weeds and they will be easier to eliminate.

Mowing is another why to inhibit weeds from taking over. Be sure your mower has a sharp blade. Your blade should be sharpened at least twice during the mowing season. The grass needs to be cut to the recommended height and if it is cut too short it will be less able to overcome stress and drought. Its’ shortness can make the lawn more susceptible to weeds and insects.
