Depending on which type of plant you are concerned about, they may or may not be affected by freezing temperatures. Many plants have the capability to withstand temperatures that fall below 0 degrees Celsius for weeks or even months at a time. The way that many plants are able to survive these types of temperatures is they go into a hardening process that makes it possible. Regardless of what types of plants that are in your yard, it may be a good idea to cover them to protect them from extreme temperatures. Different climate regions will need to know what the specifics are for colder temperatures and those plants.
Once you have determined that your plants or flower beds will need to be covered, there are several different techniques that can be used to help protect your plants. One of the most popular ways for covering plants is to lay light blankets or even sheets over the top of your flower beds and then cover those with a layer of plastic for added protection. You should also water plants the morning before the freeze is going to happen because we soil is known to hold heat.
For plants and flowers that are in pots, you may want to consider bringing them indoors, perhaps there is room in your garage. When this is not possible, it is best to lay them down on their side and cover them with two layers of freeze cloth. Many experts advise to cover the plants from the top to the ground for the best protection.
