Yard work is a year-round chore. A bit of work during the fall helps you be prepared for spring. Make sure that your lawn is free of leaves. It is important to not leave a winter lawn too tall, two and a half inches is a good height to leave the lawn for the winter. Fertilizing one last time before winter sets will help recovery in spring. Remember that lawn care includes caring for your equipment, empty and take in your garden hoses before the freezing weather sets in, turn off outside faucets to avoid freezing, and take your mower into the shop for servicing so it will be ready in the spring.
When spring arrives its time to get back out and ensure a perfect yard. There are two things that may seem to go against what seems correct, but it is better to cut a lawn a little long then too short and leaving clippings help the lawn. Clippings help retain water, attract earthworms, and decreases crabgrass.
The one time you want to cut your grass short is when you are reseeding. Aerating the soil will help new grass grow and improve the condition of established grass. When seeding to improve a lawn, cut the grass to about one inch tall, then over seed the area. That will allow the new seed to grow. It is important not to over water.
Fertilizing on a regular basis is important. A lawn should be fertilized every three months from spring to fall. It is also important to make sure the PH of the ground is in the correct range, have the PH checked every couple of years.
