There are several yard work projects that can be done to improve the growth of plants in your yard. Pruning is a good way to promote growth in fruit trees, shrubs and some types of flowers. Dormant pruning is done during the Fall and Winter and is a job for those hardy souls who can stand the cold. That person is rewarded with healthier plants and less work during the warmer months.
Removing weeds before their root systems have a chance to fully develop is another way to improve growth of plants in your yard. In order to keep weeds under control it is suggested that preventative measures be taken. Using organic mulch around garden plants helps to ensure weed seeds are not getting the sunlight they need to germinate. Using a hoe to slightly loosen the weed root systems makes them easier to remove. Also, watering the weedy area a few hours before removing the weeds makes them easier to pull.
Another good way to promote the growth of plants in your yard is to rake some of the leaves into your garden in the fall. By placing a layer of leaves in your garden you will not only keep the weeds from growing but you will also insulate your plants from the ice and snow. You will also receive another reward from placing these leaves in your garden. Earthworms are our friends and they are working for us all year by building and improving the soil in our gardens. Leaves give the earthworms a warm, insulated place to do their work. As you can see there are several things you can do to improve plant growth in your yard.
