Yard work doesn't have to be just another chore you tick off of your 'To Do' list. Doing yard work gives you an opportunity to connect with nature, to enjoy the flight and song of birds, sunshine on your face, creating a beautiful background in which to live out your life, providing wholesome food for your family, marking time through the stately progression of seasons.
Yard work is also healthy for you. It's considered to be a moderate work out, burning as many calories in an hour as 45 minutes of aerobic exercise. It strengthens bones and muscles, improves flexibility, balance, and lung function, and is good for the cardiovascular system. And that sunshine provides vitamin D, which helps with the absorption of calcium. Working in the yard has a calming influence that reduces stress and fights depression. Afterward, there is the deep satisfaction of seeing the results of your efforts in the newly-mown lawn, the weeded vegetable garden, and the beautiful flowers and vegetables that are thriving in your care.
Involve your kids or significant other and make it a fun family activity. Even toddlers can help to pick up twigs. Make up games that involve yard work and take frequent breaks with healthy snacks. Older kids can work for an hour or so between breaks.
Even seniors or people with disabilities can enjoy yard work. There are specialty tools available that make it easier for those with arthritis or who are confined to a wheelchair to be able to continue enjoying gardening.
