Uses and Tips For Mulch

Taking time to use organic or inorganic mulches in your garden can be a wise decision. There are several mulches available and several ways to use it. Weather you want a decorative look to your garden or help with moisture retention, mulch is the way to go. An organic mulch, made of wood chips, hay, leaves or grasses, can cause many problems in your garden.

This mulch can encourage slugs and insects to live in the garden. Unpleasant fungus can also form on the mulch. Now the inorganic mulch can be plastic, gravel or rubber. You can choose colors to match your landscape. Rubber mulch is a more affordable mulch. An inorganic mulch can withstand many weather conditions. Gravel can be a problem when removing debris that it gathers. When you put mulch around your plants, you are helping the soil retain its moisture. This can be helpful during a drought season. Mulch is also helpful in protecting the roots from the heat of summer.

When winter sets in, the mulch can also protect the roots from the cold. Weeds in a garden can be so burdensome. However, mulch can be a great way to prevent them from growing around your plants. Never have more thickness than three to four inches of mulch spread around the plants. Also, keep the mulch a good one to two inches away from the base of a tree or plant. You do not want the mulch to cause them to rot and die. When you step back and look at your garden, you can be proud of how beautiful the mulch makes everything look. It is a great addition and way to decorate all your landscaping.
